Hiking With Child

Maternal Mental Health

I have an additional specialism in the mental health of mums and supporting mothers / birthing parents with any challenges relating to parenthood - including pregnancy, postnatal support and the parenting journey thereafter.

The first years after having a baby are seen as being the most happy time of life, yet for many mums it is a time when you may be feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, anxious and isolated. I understand the unique challenges and emotional complexities that come with pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood and I offer a supportive and nurturing space where you can talk through any issues surrounding motherhood and / or the experience of becoming a mum / birthing parent and the transition involved.

Some examples of reasons why mums/birthing parents seek counselling include:

  • Pregnancy issues /worries about the birth

  • Post-natal anxiety

  • Post-natal depression / low mood/ feeling sad that things are not how you expected them to be

  • Birth experiences

  • Family issues / exploring relationships with own parents/siblings

  • Intergenerational trauma/not wanting to pass behaviours on to children

  • Social isolation /social anxiety

  • Changes in sense of identity

  • Feelings of overwhelm / burnout / fatigue / sleep deprivation

  • Feelings of worthlessness/not good enough/low self-image

  • Mum guilt / mum rage

  • Putting everyone else's needs before your own.

You are welcome to bring your baby along to your counselling session and/or to work online with me with your baby present - we can explore how this might work during our initial call.

To try and keep counselling as accessible as possible at this important time of life, I also have a limited number of lower cost online sessions for people who are on maternity leave and for non-working mothers / birthing parents - I am happy to discuss your needs and circumstances during our initial call.

I am also part of The Birth Collective - a wonderful resource for all things related to pregnancy, birth and post-natal support and I am on their directory of recommended practitioners.- www.birthcollective.uk

"We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy.

Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know."
